The government is almost done constructing the first “transit homes” for young married couples under the age of 30, and should be ready to receive tenants eary next year.
The 1Malaysia Transit Home project, which takes up two blocks at the People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Bukit Jalil, will be able to house 632 couples.
For young couples under the age of 30 and making less than a combined RM3,000 a month, and owning no other property in the Klang Valley, the 650sq ft units, with three rooms and two bathrooms, will be available for rent at only RM250 a month.
The transit homes are only available for rent for a maximum of two years, after which the Federal Government hopes the young couples will have saved enough to move on to own their own homes, or to rent a home from the open market.
Youth and Sports Minister and UMNO and BN Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin the project, which his Youth wing had proposed at last year’s UMNO general assembly, was open to Malaysians of all races.
“It gives them a place to live while paying very low rent for two years until they manage to find a permanent home and are more financially stable,” he said, as reported by The Star Online‘s P Aruna.
He added that Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan had agreed to make the transit home concept a Federal Government policy.
“He has agreed that in any PPR project, at least 10% of the units will be allocated as transit homes.
“There are now PPR schemes being developed in Kepong, Kuala Terengganu, Johor Baru and Kota Kinabalu,” he said.
The two blocks in the Bukit Jalil development would be ready by the end of January, but Khairy said eligible tenants could start moving in early that month.
