110-year-old Panggung Bandaraya to be turned into gallery

The iconic Panggung Bandaraya in Jalan Raja — the historic theatre hall built in 1904 — will be turned into a gallery of artefacts that paint the capital city’s history.

Located just across Dataran Merdeka, the hall will transform into Galeri Rakyat next year, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said.

“DBKL has allocated RM30 million for the renovation of Panggung Bandaraya, located in the old building of the Kuala Lumpur High Court, into a gallery. Other than Galeri Rakyat Kuala Lumpur, it will house the mayor’s office dedicated to welcome foreign guests,” Bernama quoted him as saying.

The building — one of the oldest in the city — is one of 22 public structures in the city that have been gazetted as a heritage building.
