Malaysian YouTuber Uncle Roger, whose real name is Nigel Ng, has come out to sort of defend himself after drawing criticism for deleting his video with China critic Mike Chen.
The 29-year-old posted a video of himself Saturday attempting to distance himself from all the drama his actions resulted in, and assured fans that there was no financial motive behind his decision to pull his video with Chen and put up the apology to Chinese fans on Weibo.
“I hate drama,” he said at the start of Saturday’s Uncle Roger ANIME? (Reddit Review) video. “I just want to make funny videos. No politics, no drama.”
“For the record, Uncle Roger, I make zero dollar from Chinese social media,” he later added. “So to see my niece and nephew say ‘I [Ng] like RMB more than MSG’ really break Uncle Roger heart.”
Hours before releasing his video, Ng told his haters on Instagram to “hit the unfollow button” instead of crafting “nasty” messages.
Ng’s video statement went up days after Chen publicly reacted to the video getting pulled, telling Ng to educate himself on the human rights abuses committed by the Chinese Communist Party, including the Tiananmen Square massacre. The video of them dissing a New York chef’s dumplings went up Jan. 10 before it was deleted the next day. Chen runs the Strictly Dumpling YouTube channel.
Ng’s Weibo apology to his 125,000 followers said he was unaware of Chen’s “incorrect” remarks about China. Backlash from fans around the world spawned the hashtag “#UnsubscribeUncleRoger.”
