The trailer for the much-anticipated Disney movie by Malaysia-born-American screenwriter Adele Lim is here and it sure looks fun and adorably kickass.

Raya and the Last Dragon is the latest work by Lim, after Crazy Rich Asians, and has been teased as a film inspired by Southeast Asian cultures. True enough, there were scenes in the animation that reminded us of Vietnam’s floating market and the majestic temples of Thailand. But the biggest highlight of all was that the movie also features a lovable yet deceitful “con baby” and the voice of Hollywood actress Awkwafina behind the dragon character.

“When we started this journey with Disney 3 years ago, we had no idea it would lead to this: a kickass fever dream of all our childhood fantasies. Growing up in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, we didn’t always feel seen by the larger world – take a good look at us now,” Lim, 46, said yesterday

All the action in this film takes place in a fantasy world of Kumanda where humans and dragons live together. It tells the story of a character named Raya and her quest to find a dragon that could help save humanity from a villain known as Druun.

The film is set to hit the big screens and on Disney’s streaming service March 5.

Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran is the voice of Raya, while the baby is voiced by young actress Thalia Tran.
