Need more movies to watch during the lockdown? Netflix will screen three films by the late Malaysian film director Yasmin Ahmad this week.

Look forward to Talentime, Mukhsin, and Rabun, by the legendary filmmaker on the streaming platform from Dec. 18, Netflix announced today. No reason was given behind the surprise tribute to the film icon, who died in 2009 after a stroke and brain hemorrhage at age 51.

“We’ve missed the late Yasmin Ahmad’s unique storytelling style. Her award-winning films have always been full of emotion, capturing the Malaysian spirit, winning over our hearts,” its tweet said. All three shows would be available globally.

Yasmin, known for pushing the boundaries of storytelling through controversial and thought-provoking plots, won multiple Malaysia Film Festival awards before her untimely death.

Rabun tells the story of an elderly couple who moved away from the city and to the countryside in search of a quiet life. Then things took an unexpected turn when a relative deceived them.

Mukhsin, which received a special mention at the 2007 International Berlin Film Festival, tells the story of a 10-year-old girl’s first love. The older version of the character also appeared in Sepet and Gubra

Talentime was Yasmin’s final film before her death that also earned her a Best Director award at the 2009 Malaysia Film Festival. It is a love story between a Malay girl named Melur and a deaf and mute Indian boy named Mahesh.
