Banglasia, an action-comedy feature film by sometimes-rapper, most-times filmmaker, and all-the-time troll Namewee might have been banned in Malaysia, but it might get a decent alternative screening venue: New York City.
The movie has been slated to premiere at the New York Asian Film Festival on July 10. The festival’s director, Goran Topalovic, told The Star Online that the NYAFF was proud to play host to a “hilarious and surreal comedy that touches on issues of political corruption, mass hysteria about immigration, and out-of-control nationalism.”
This will actually be Namewee’s second time as a celebrated participant to the NYAFF, although the trip to New York City will be the provocateur’s first.
“Oour audience loves his irreverent approach to filmmaking, his refusal to compromise, and his go-for-broke sense of satire.
“While Banglasia makes fun of issues that are of great concern to Malaysian audiences, Americans can definitely identify with them, too,” Topalovic added.
“I hope more Malaysians will come support this film and watch it with me on my very first trip to New York. You’ll be the first batch of Malaysians to witness history in the making since it’s banned in Malaysia, so it’s going to be a very meaningful occasion,” he said in a statement.
We have no idea what Banglasia looks like (we searched for the trailer, to no avail) but if this short skit, also titled Banglasia, is any indication, the movie should be simultaneously hilarious and horrifying:
