DJ Fuzz’s Mixology Music imprint’s rampage through the Bahasa Malaysia hip-hop charts continues unabated. After signing and making a household name out of Negeri Sembilan-slanging W.A.R.I.S., Mixology is aiming to repeat the formula with another rapper representing Kelantan and that state’s own incomprehensible local BM dialect.
Savvy music fans have already marked Iwere as a name to look out for, but this might be his big break into viral video and mainstream radio superstardom. “Oghe Kito” (“Our People” in English, “Orang Kita” in, you know, regular BM) appropriately features the similarly Kelantan-born Dikir Warriors and is set in the rapper’s hometown of Kota Baru.
If you’ve been linking “east coast hip-hop” to New York City in your mind, prepare to rethink that equation. Malaysian East Coast hip-hop is all about the budu:
