Malaysians can’t stop talking about the avant-garde black dress singer Aina Abdul wore to the red carpet at the Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian (Most Popular Stars of Berita Harian) awards show Saturday.

Aina, 28, wore the maxi velvet dress by high-end fashion brand Behati, along with a massive rose headpiece, and paired it with black high heels. Founded in 2018, Behati is known for putting its own unique, sometimes bizarre twists to traditional Malaysian clothing.

Designer Tan Kel Wen told his followers that the dress from his ‘Kutior’ collection was inspired by a 1967 look by Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.

“I wanted to do a tribute look to the master of ‘kutior’, as in couture, Cristóbal Balenciaga. A look created in the 1967,” Tan wrote on Instagram yesterday, adding: “The rose drape is made from 10 meters of Silk Taffeta from India.”

On Twitter, people who reposted photos of Aina’s fashion-forward look said that the outfit was Met Gala-worthy.

“OMG I love Aina Abdul’s fashion. If she goes to the Met Gala, she can rival Rihanna,” HafeeziRazikin said.
