Malaysian-born Guy Sebastian is repping Australia at this year’s Eurovision contest

This is about the only way Malaysia is ever going to be in the same sentence as the notorious Eurovision song contest.

Klang-born Guy Sebastian, who’s been making waves in Australia for years, has been selected the Land Down Under’s representative to Eurovision in Vienna, Austria this May.

The announcement was made at the Sydney Opera House this morning.

Sebastian said that while he hasn’t picked a song to deliver at the annual competition yet, he does know that he wants to perform an “epic” piece in Vienna.

“Either super fun or a big ballad that showcases my voice,” he said, as quoted by Bernama.

He will have until March 16 to announce which song he’ll be performing, well ahead of Eurovision’s May 23 air date.

Sebastian has been picking up accolades throughout his career, winning the Australian Idol reality TV contest in 2003, and declared by Idol mastermind Simon Cowell as having one of the best voices at the 2003 World Idol finals.

He’s also performed his R&B and gospel-inflected music for the likes of Queen Elizabeth II, Orpah Winfrey, and Pope Benedict XVI.

Here’s his latest music video, for ‘Linger’ featuring US rapper Lupe Fiasco:

You can bet Guy’s going to have a hell of a time at Eurovision, win or lose, because hey – we’re talking about a song contest that was won by one Conchina Wurst last year. Check it out:
