Malaysian beauty brand Dovell has blocked the public from viewing its TikTok account after it put up a video of a woman miming to captions implying that waxing vaginas could cause sexually transmitted diseases.
After apologizing for the “confusion” caused by its Wednesday video, the previously public account was set to private. The new brand only has under 200 followers on TikTok but the flak has already spread on Twitter, where people have criticized the brand for disinformation.
“It’s SEXUAL Transmitted Disease (STD) not Waxing Transmitted Disease,” @Anaszack said on Twitter. “STD is caused by having sex with an infected person. Even if have sex with someone who has STD, it’s not caused by the wax.”
The homegrown brand has apologized to people online and published a clarification in a TikTok video that is now unavailable to the public since their account has been privatized.
The 16-second clip titled Why can’t you wax Miss V gave three reasons why a person should not wax around their bikini area. They said that “you can get STDs,” “bacterial infections,” or “skin abrasions.” The video ended stating that one doesn’t need to wax their private parts.
“It’s enough to just give yourself a trim down there, don’t need to wax your private parts,” a caption read. Dovell sells hair removal products including no-heat wax and waxing strips.
