Step aside, The Force Awakens. Shut your filthy mouth, Deadpool. And even local critical darling Ola Bola needs to take a yellow card, as animated feature film BoBoiBoy The Movie has broken local box office records with a superhuman RM500,000 take in only it first day on the big screen.
Continuing the television exploits of the titular character and his muhibbah band of superpowered child heroes, Primeworks Studios’ BoBoiBoy The Movie opened yesterday on more than 100 screens nationwide, attracting at least 30,000 pairs of eyeballs to catch it already – and it’s not even the weekend yet.
The movie, rendered in CGI by Animonsta Studios, looks set to shatter this year’s highest-grossing movie to date, the mostly-fictional-but-not-really football nostalgia flick Ola Bola, which earned RM2.5 million in its first 4 days in cinemas. (Ola Bola opened on 126 screens nationwide.)
Kids (and kids at heart) are going to have a difficult choice to make this weekend: BoBoiBoy The Movie is going head-to-head with Disney Animation’s Zootopia … or, you know, camp out at the cineplex and catch both.
