A fisherman managed to sell off one of his biggest catches ever — a 150kg giant grouper netted off Pulau Kendi on Tuesday night.

Ka Bee Cafe owner Chew Kean Ghee was more than willing to get the whopper of a fish onto his restaurant menu, paying RM7,500 for the monstrous 1.8m-long catch, reports The Star Online.

The giant grouper however isn’t the biggest fish Penangites have seen in recent years. The fisherman — 43-year-old Tan Kah Seng — had caught an ever bigger grouper that weighed 200kg back in 2014. Chew had bought that fish as well for RM11,000, and served hundreds of customers with bowls of fish bee hoon soup with its meat.

Like its name implies, giant groupers can grow to colossal sizes, reaching up to 2.7m in length and 400kg in weight. The heaviest grouper ever caught was a 308kg brute that was snagged off Fernandina Beach, Florida in 1961.
