McDonald’s reveals how it makes Chicken McNuggets; we prepare for the nightmares

Ever wondered what goes into making the foods we love to eat? Satay might just be slivers of meat, sticks, and buckets of oil and sugar; roti canai is probably just dough, oil and a little operational sweat. But what about that oh-so-delicious super-processed fast food we keep running back to?

McDonald’s, especially the fast food chain’s American arm, came under fire a while ago when photos circulated online purporting to show the main ingredient in their Chicken McNuggets, a mixture of scraps of low-grade meat and ammonium hydroxide, an ingredient in fertilizers, household cleaners and (“gasp!”) explosives, that quickly earned the name “pink goo”:

Yikes.

Needless to say, McDonald’s has been fending off these rumours, insisting their popular (and delicious) McNuggets are not in any way made with the churned bubblegum anaconda pictured above. McDonald’s Canada has recently taken clearing the air a step further, and released a video of their industrial preparation process for McNuggets.

According to the video, the fast food giant uses chicken breast meat, chicken skin, and seasoning for their McNuggets, before sealing the meat in two layers of batter. And no, there’s no pink goo in sight:

Are you happy now? Will you go back to eating McNuggets by the box, comforted in the knowledge you’re not swallowing fried fertilizer sludge? (As if you ever left.) McDonald’s Malaysia, can you co-sign your Canadian friends for us, so we can all rest easy tonight (full of delicious, delicious McNuggets)?
