COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Mention “porky pizzas” and Skippys would be the first to come to mind.
They first started out in Phileo Damansara, and have recently opened another outlet in Damansara Uptown — this is of course, good news for pork lovers around the area.
Located along the same row as The Ship, Skippys is a casual restaurant with simple furnishings — a place where you can just chill out with some cold beer and your favourite porky dishes.
Calling themselves “the real pork pizza company!”, pork pizzas naturally rule the menu.
We had one of their best-sellers: Marc’s Special Pizza, full of ham, mushrooms, eggs, baby spinach and made super aromatic with garlic and onions. The pizza dough was just the right thickness, complemented by gooey sticky mozzarella cheese. Yes, we’d go back there for stuff like this!
Two starters that should not be missed are their Goulash and Skippys Salad, with sun-dried tomatoes, black olives, anchovies and bacon. The thick goulash was hearty, filled with a good measure of vegetables and meat. Fresh leafy greens with crisp fried bacon in the salad – you can never fault this combo!
Skippys’ Glutton Pork Burger with bacon, egg, mushrooms and lots of fries was a whopper of a burger. The thick meaty patty was well flavoured and this was a wholesome meal by itself. Be prepared to share if you are a small eater or want to have other dishes as well.
Skippys’ Pork Knuckle with fried potatoes and salad was presented in a very different style. The meat was chopped up into pieces and the skin fried to a crisp and curl. It looked promising but when we bit into the inviting-looking curled skin, alas – it was hard and chewy. The sauce and meat were good though.
The Spaghetti Bolognaise was comforting – pasta and minced meat in a tomato sauce always make the world better.
We also tried the German Sausages with salad and fries and Meatloaf with Fried Potatoes & Salad. The sausages were decent and the meatloaf was average. We will stick to the pizzas, pastas and the burger here.
