Giant panda cake baked to celebrate non-cake eating pandas’ birthdays

30 people toiled for 30 hours to produce a 450kg cake (in the shape of a panda) to mark the ninth birthday of Xing Xing and Liang Liang, the two Chinese pandas currently residing in KL’s Zoo Negara.

The cake was a pet (haha but not really – please don’t plan on having a panda bear as a pet) project of Universiti Teknologi Mara’s (UiTM) hospitality and hotel management faculty.

The Malaysian Book of Records now lists the cake as the “largest panda replica cake” in the country, a record we cannot imagine had a lot of competition for. But still, Malaysians love their records.

“Materials required to produce this record-breaking cake include more than 1000kg of flour and sugar as well as 2700 eggs,” UiTM faculty head Dr Salim Abdul Talib told The Star Online, listing as main ingredients foodstuffs actual pandas can’t actually eat safely. He added that 30 faculty members spent 8 days working on the cake.

This cake will probably never be seen by the pandas, let alone be served to them.

Xing Xing and Liang Liang turned nine yesterday, in case you were wondering.
