COCONUTS HOT SPOT — For some decent and affordable Japanese fares in a no-fuss comfortable setting, Bonbori in Setia Walk Puchong is a good place to check out. They are incredibly busy, especially during weekends, as I found out recently.
On an early Sunday evening, customers were queuing up at the front door, mostly families.

Flipping through their menu, I could understand their popularity as their prices are pretty affordable and food portion served was more than adequate.
Their Hachi Shoku Sashimi is a platter meant for 4 people and there is a pretty good selection of sashimi served – salmon, tuna, yellowtail, squids and ebi. Their sashimi platters come in different sizes depending on the number of people dining.

For appetizers, the Aigamo Salad– smoked duck salad and Special Kakiage – deep-fried assorted vegetables are good choices. The Japanese sesame dressing, while very common, still gives the salad a nice dimension with the smokey duck breast. The kakiage is crunchy and makes a good snack.

I like their Unagi Tofu which looks like a sushi roll but does not contain any sushi rice. Instead, what is served is deep-fried tofu topped with grilled eel and omelette – a refreshing change from plain vinegared rice and healthier too, of course.

Bonbori’s maki rolls are substantial and very reasonably priced. I totally enjoy the Tamago Mentaiyaki, Aburi Trio Maki and the very pretty Rose Maki. Tamago (pressed egg omelette) and mentai (cod fish roe) are two of my favourite ingredients in any Japanese meal so the Tamago Mentaiyaki really hit the mark for me.

As for the Rose Maki, the skilful twisting of mango and salmon slices into pretty rosettes wins extra points from me.
Don’t be surprised to see some fusionistic injections in some of Bonbori’s dishes. The Shake Atama Kimchee Soup is their take of kimchi soup, a good choice on a cold rainy evening.

Shake Atama Kimchee Soup
A stone pot of bubbling kimchi soup with a salmon fish head submerged is brought to our table. After pushing aside the vegetables and tofu, I can see the portion is pretty generous with additional chunks of salmon beneath.
Bonbori is a good place to head to for some simple and affordable Japanese dishes. Be sure to call ahead to make reservations especially on weekends.
