Chef Wan’s Singaporean buffet restaurant closes down

Looks like business isn’t doing so well for local chef Chef Wan.

The celebrity chef’s halal buffet restaurant in Singapore, 1 Market, reportedly closed down permanently on Sunday, according to several media reports in Singapore.

Owned and operated by Food Junction, the 11,000 sq ft food arena opened in November 2012 and was known for its wide variety of halal Asian cuisine based on his very own recipes.

The general manager of Food Junction, Jeffrey Lim, told Singapore’s The New Paper that the management had decided to close 1 Market due to a sharp drop in business.

“Due to higher operating expenses, we have been unable to sustain the business,” he was quoted by the news portal as saying, adding that the restaurant had not been profitable for some time.

According to a report by Yahoo Singapore, the quality of the food as well as negative reviews from the diners also played a role in its closure.

Over the past few months, diners had reportedly been posting negative reviews on 1 Market’s Facebook page, mostly on the poor quality of its food and service.

Meanwhile, the 59-year-old Chef Wan told BERITAMediacorp that he was disappointed with the closure, and that he was unhappy with 1 Market’s management and the drop in food quality.

“The food is not prepared (according to) how I have demonstrated and the chefs do as they please. When I heard what happened there, I got quite angry.

“I can see clearly that the problems with the management have affected the quality of the food,” he was quoted by the website as saying.
