A customer at Genki Sushi Saturday wound up with a bill of over HK$10,000 (US$1,284) after sharing his QR code in a social media post, which prompted click-happy netizens to scan the label and order dozens of dishes unbeknownst to him.
Posting in a Facebook group called “Hong Kong Sushi Sashimi Concern Group,” the customer, surnamed Choi, shared a picture of his receipt—with a plate of sushi—at Genki Sushi at East Point City in Tseung Kwan O.
“Eating at Genki again today,” he captioned the photo, in which his QR code used for ordering online is also displayed.
Netizens then decided to prank Choi, ordering over 100 dishes—among them fatty tuna, soft shell crab and 21 plates of eel rice, the most expensive item on the menu—in the nine minutes after he shared the picture on Facebook. The flood of orders led to some dishes selling out on the online system.
The picture of his final receipt showed a bill total of HK$10,090 (US$1,295), including service charge.
Genki Sushi told media that the restaurant did not charge the man for the items ordered by the online pranksters.
