On Monday, cozy music lounge Orange Peel is hosting a charity screening of “Miss Representation”, a (cleverly named) 2011 American documentary written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
The film explores how media and culture have created a negative image of women in positions of power and influence, and emphasises that a woman’s power comes not from her beauty or sexuality, but from her intelligence and capability to lead – though we would hope you knew that already.
The documentary features interviews with badass women like Katie Couric, Rosario Dawson, Gloria Steinem, Margaret Cho, Condoleezza Rice, and Nancy Pelosi.
The screening is organised by Asian Women’s Empowerment (AWE) Connect, a non-profit that aims to unite and inspire women around the world. AWE connect holds virtual conferences, exchanges and various other events, all to create a safe platform and network for creative and driven women.
Besides serving as an opportunity to learn about how messed up society can be (yay!), the event will also be promoting Enrich, a local charity that strives to empower migrant domestic workers. Though the event is free, donations to Enrich are encouraged.
