Ying Ying the panda suffers miscarriage in week Hong Kong was expecting delivery

Less than a week after Hongkongers rejoiced on hearing our beloved panda Ying Ying was pregnant, we must report the heartbreaking news that this is no longer the case.

Ocean Park announced today that 10-year-old Ying Ying, who was due to deliver some time this week, has suffered a miscarriage.

The foetus appeared “to be breaking down and there was no heart beat detected….The foetus is no longer viable,” vet Lee Foo Khong said, according to the SCMP.

The cause of the miscarriage is still unknown.

The would-be cub, whose existence we were only told about on the National Day holiday last Thursday, was due to be the first-ever panda born in captivity in Hong Kong.

Ying Ying was reported to have successfully mated on a “sex holiday” to Sichuan last year, although she also underwent artificial insemination.

P.S.: Sorry to ruin your day.
