A year after fatal double-decker bus accident, driver gets 45 months in jail

A bus driver has been sentenced to 45 months in jail and had his driving license suspended for five years over a fatal traffic accident in Lam Tin last year that killed one person and injured 20 others.

Man Chun-pun had earlier pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving causing death and another count of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, hk01 reports.

The 61-year-old was behind the wheel of the 681 Citybus from Ma On Shan to Central in January 2017 when it crashed into a concrete road barriers on Lam Tin and flipped onto its side.

The District Court heard earlier that Man has a history of high blood pressure and felt dizzy just before losing control of the double decker bus, which was traveling well over the speed limit of 70 kilometers per hour when the accident happened.

A 42-year-old woman surnamed Chung, who was on the bus with her husband, was declared dead at the scene.

The defendant told the court that he felt a lot of regret and had been deeply affected by the accident.

Upon sentencing this morning, Judge Timothy Harry Casewell criticized the defendant for failing to slow down his vehicle, adding that the circumstances justified a heavy penalty, RTHK reports.
