Spy cameras disguised as smoke detectors
The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) has long been tracking popular locations for peeping toms to take up-skirt photos of women.
Recently, the DAB has found that perverts have taken their peeping to a whole new level – installing spy cameras, concealed as clothes hooks, smoke detectors, light bulbs and plugs, in changing rooms and public facilities.
Some devices are also disguised as sunglasses, pens and even chewing gum, are easily purchased and affordable. According to The Standard, the DAB found the devices range from a few hundred dollars to about HK$1,000 and can be conveniently bought in Sham Shui Po. The devices are also equipped to transmit data via wi-fi, built-in memory card and battery that can last for hours.
Currently, taking such photographs is an offence under the loitering ordinance and offenders can face up to six months in prison and HK$10,000 fine. Offenders can also be charged for disorderly conduct in public places and punishable by up to 12 months in prison and a fine of HK$5,000.
