A 36-year-old mother is in critical condition after she risked her life to save her drowning son, despite not knowing how to swim herself.
The woman, surnamed Kam, had brought her husband and 12-year-old son, surnamed Leung, to a Cheung Chau villa as part of her company retreat.
At 5pm yesterday afternoon, Kam and a 42-year-old colleague, surnamed Wong, brought four children from their party, including Leung, to the villa’s swimming pool.
The 12-year-old started struggling in the water, and Wong told Apple Daily that he appeared to be drowning. Both women dove into the water and the boy was successfully pulled out. Kam, who doesn’t know how to swim, reportedly fell unconscious and sunk to the bottom of the pool, which is two metres deep.
The 36-year-old was rushed to Cheung Chau Hospital, and later airlifted to Eastern Hospital for emergency treatment. She was reported to have no pulse, and was given two intracardiac injections to restart her heartbeat.
Kam remains in intensive care, while her son is reported to be unharmed. According to Apple Daily, investigations into whether there was a lifeguard on duty are underway.
