Woman survives 11-storey plunge, fall broken by drying racks

The survival of a 34-year-old woman – who fell from an 11th-floor apartment in Wan Chai this morning – has been partially credited to clothes drying racks, which broke her fall.

The 34-year-old, an unidentified Ukrainian woman, reportedly fell out of the window of a 30-year-old Russian man’s apartment, and onto a metal canopy on the building’s fifth floor at approximately 3am.

The two had allegedly met earlier at a pub in Wan Chai and retired to the man’s apartment at 18 Johnston Road, where they continued chatting.

According to Oriental Daily, the woman had become “emotional” during the conversation and jumped out of the window.

However, a police source told the SCMP that initial investigations suggest the Russian man had walked away and didn’t know how the woman fell out of his window. In addition, she was reportedly conscious after the fall and was calling for help.

The 34-year-old survived the ordeal with only scratches and minor fractures to her ribs, and is reportedly in “stable condition” at Queen Mary Hospital.

The SCMP’s police source elaborated that there is no indication that the woman was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. At the moment, investigations have not revealed any suspicious circumstances, and no arrests have been made.
