Woman jailed for abusing maid not guilty for failing to pay wages

Last year 42-year-old Catherine Au Yuk-shan and her husband, Tai Chi-wai, were jailed five-and-a-half years and three years and three months respectively for abusing their Indonesian helper, 30-year-old Kartika Puspitasari.

During her employment, Puspitasari claimed she endured attacks with a bicycle chain, hot iron, paper cutter, hanger, and shoe.

However, as the SCMP reports, the Sha Tin Court yesterday found the couple not guilty for failing to pay Puspitasari her wages of two years, totaling HK$86,000.

The court said it didn’t make sense for Puspitasari to stay on for two years and renew her contract if she wasn’t getting paid. She also didn’t tell her friends or report it to the police when she was let out.
