Woman caught attempting to smuggle HKD750,000 worth of cocaine into Hong Kong

A woman arriving from Manila was arrested at Hong Kong International Airport on Saturday for trying to smuggle what was suspected to be cocaine.

Customs officers became suspicious of her handbag when it was X-rayed during customs clearance. Upon closer inspection, they discovered what appeared to be two slabs of suspected cocaine concealed in hidden compartments.

The two slabs of cocaine, weighing 330 and 390 grams, are estimated to have a total market value of HKD750,000.

The arrested woman, a 37-year-old who claims to be a phone operator, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates’ Courts today.

Under the Dangerous Drug Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence that is punishable by a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of HKD5 million.
