Woah, rewind and freeze!: Hello Kitty’s NOT a cat?

For all you Hongkongers out there who grew up (or continue to persist) with nearly every variation of Hello Kitty merchandise, you’re in for a shock. We’ve just found out that Hello Kitty IS NOT ACTUALLY A CAT!

We don’t know how you’re taking the news, but we feel like Jane in that chick flick 27 Dresses right now: “I feel like I just found out my favourite love song was written about a sandwich.”

Sanrio, the Japanese company that created Hello Kitty and led us to believe a lie our whole lives, clarified this week (let’s ignore the time it took them to do this) that Hello Kitty is in fact just a cartoon character, and not a cat.

She’s a cheerful young girl named Kitty White who lives in London with her parents, Mary and George, and has a twin sister, Mimmy, who is perpetually stuck in time. She owns a cat named Charmmy White, which (thankfully) is actually a cat. Kitty’s birthday is on Nov. 1, she is of blood type A, and likes to bake delicious cookies and apple pies.

The company, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, has also just confirmed that the reason Hello Kitty doesn’t have a mouth is because, “She’s Sanrio’s ambassador to the world and isn’t bound to any particular language. She speaks from her heart.”

So when you thought you were cuddling up to your cute little plush cat at night, you were actually trying to spoon a mute 40-year-old Londoner. This goes beyond the realms of weird.

Thankfully, Peanuts Worldwide has confirmed that Snoopy is in fact a dog. But now that our world’s been turned upside-down, we’ve got our suspicions about Miffy.
