Professor of Public Health at the University of Hong Kong, Lam Tai-hing, believes that money is the most important incentive to get smokers to quit.
He urges the government to increase the tobacco tax even further. Yet, with the growing number of illicit cigarettes being smuggled into the city, we’re doubtful whether increasing tobacco tax actually curbs smoking or just curbs people from buying duty-paid cigarettes.
Lam has also launched a Youth Quitline at the University of Hong Kong and have been exploring new ways to get the youth to quit, like a cash incentive of HK$300!
