They’re known as wild boars for a reason.
In the past few weeks, a series of wild pig attacks on people have occurred in a Ma On Shan village, prompting authorities to remind residents, again, that: You. Should. Not. Feed. Them.
According to a report by Apple Daily yesterday, a 38-year-old man had to be taken to hospital after he was injured by a wild boar on Sunday night.
He was leaving the home of his 36-year-old girlfriend in the village of Che Ha Tsuen on Sai Sha Road at 10pm when he saw a group of four wild boars eating next to a garbage station. Suddenly, one of the animals came up from behind and injured his calf.
He then called his girlfriend, who alerted the police. Officers inspected the area but could not find the wild boars. The man was taken to hospital.
The newspaper reports that two weeks earlier, another person also had to be sent to the hospital after he was attacked by a wild boar at the same spot, leaving him in need of five stitches.
The victim of that attack, surnamed Leung, told the newspaper: “I was at a banquet that night, and there was half a roast chicken left over, so my friends suggested I take it home for my son. So I got the chicken to take away.
“I saw the wild boar, and I think it smelt the chicken and so it charged, slammed into me, and sent me flying.”
Other residents told the newspaper that they have also been harassed by wild boars, with one female villager surnamed Shum saying that one of them snatched her bag of groceries.
Another male resident, surnamed Wu, said: “some of these wild boars have really big tusks, just like elephants.”
He added: “It’s because a lot of people feed the wild boars, if you’re carrying a white bag, then they will think it’s for them.”
Personnel from the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department were spotted at the scene hanging a banner reminding people not to feed the wild boars.
The news comes after the newspaper also reported three wild boars were spotted walking in the middle of Causeway Bay Road at 3pm yesterday.
