What’s the rush? Photo of commuter getting off bus via emergency door in a traffic jam shared widely

Everyone knows that emergency doors should only be used when in the case of, you know, an emergency. However, one rather selfish commuter has sparked anger online after he was pictured disembarking a bus via the emergency door after apparently losing his patience during a traffic jam.

A picture showing the man, who was not identified, climbing out of a KMB bus was posted on a Facebook page for bus discussions (yes, that’s a thing) last week. In the caption, the uploader wrote, “From what I heard, there was a huge traffic jam and some guy selfishly decided to get out using the emergency door.”

Another user later explained that a car crash had taken place nearby, causing the traffic congestion in the area.

While it is unclear whether the bus was moving when the picture was taken and if the bus driver was notified about it, the picture has drawn a wave of criticism from netizens, who slammed the man’s actions as “dangerous” and “idiotic”. One person sarcastically quipped that he may as well have broken the windows to get out. Another commented, “what’s the rush?”

One very sensible Facebook user said, “The driver would have allowed you to get off the bus if you just asked.” Some rather extreme commenters simply stated that “no one would cry” for the man if he was hit by a car.

A KMB spokesperson later told EJ Insight that it is against the law for passengers to open the emergency door and use it as an exit without a “justifiable” reason. Offenders could be fined HKD3,000 and jailed for up to six months.
