Whatevs, Man: LegCo member with worst attendance rate says “it’s not a sin, is it?”

Lau Wong Fat, Hong Kong’s oldest lawmaker at the ripe age of 77, attended only 3 out of 38 meetings for the Finance Committee. That’s an 8% attendance rate and a 100% fail in our books. Lau is also the chief of the body that represents the interests of indigenous people from the New Territories.

His other attendance rate are not as bad, but still laughably low, winning him again the first prize for lowest attendance for both the House Committee (30%) and the regular full Legislative Council meetings (83%), reports the SCMP. To be fair, Leung Kwok Hung, also known as “Long Hair”, had the same attendance rate for the regular full council meetings, but since he was in prison for a month until a few weeks ago we guess that’s an acceptable excuse.

The SCMP asked Lau about his absenteeism, and he simply responded that “it’s not a sin, is it?” Right, nevermind his duty to the Hong Kong public as an elected official! As long as he thinks it’s not a sin, he’s in the clear. He continued: “It doesn’t matter. You just report it.”
