We’re Moving to Macau! Hong Kong workers increase by a record 20% across the bay

The number of Hongkongers working in Macau has increased by a record 20 percent in the past three months, official statistics reveal. Our little sister across the bay opened her arms to 1,500 new Kongers this quarter, seeing us outpace other non-resident worker populations in terms of growth threefold.

According to the Statistics and Census Bureau, there are now 8,178 Hong Kongers working in Macau, up 19.7 percent from the 7,195 recorded last quarter. However, with just a 5.5 percent share, we still only claim fourth place on the scale of the non-resident populations, behind mainlanders (64.3 percent), Filipinos (12 percent) and Vietnamese (8.2 percent).

According to the figures, a quarter of Macau’s entire population is now made up of non-resident workers. The increase also coincides with a record number of new businesses being created in Macau (1,454), up 30 percent from the year before.

Is it time to get worried that our little sister’s outgrowing us? Nah, we’ll always be way cooler!
