Wellcome fined for offering discount that’s not a discount

Do your math before you fall for special offers. Wellcome supermarket was found to have misled shoppers by offering two bags of potato chips at a “discount” that turned out to be more expensive than one bag of potato chips , with a price tag reading “standard price $5.50, discounted price for $11.50 for two.” Definitely not something you’d catch if you were in a hurry!

Under new consumer protection laws that took effect in July last year, Wellcome has been convicted and fined HK$10,000 for possessing goods with a false trade description.

The Consumer Council warns shoppers to be skeptical about discounts and not to put absolute trust in discount tags. Instead, consumers should do the math before deciding whether the goods on offer are really a discount like the retailer claims, and of course, to lodge a complain if it’s misleading.
