It’s been a bad week for sushi, with one woman finding false teeth in her salmon sushi, and Maxim’s getting fined HKD6,000 after another woman found chewed gum in sushi she purchased from one of the food conglomerate’s stores last year.
A woman bought two boxes of take-out sushi from Sushi Express in Tsz Wan Shan on Monday night. Her mother was eating a piece of salmon sushi when, to her horror, she spat out three connected false teeth, according to EJ Insight.
The manager of the Sushi Express branch in question says that none of their staff wear false teeth (is that supposed to be reassuring?) and that they wear hygienic masks during the preparation of their food.
A Food and Environmental Hygiene Department rep said that they inspected the store in response to the woman’s complaint and found that it had satisfactory hygiene levels.
The company is investigating the case.
On Wednesday, Maxim’s was fined HKD6,000 after an incident in July 2014 in which a woman took a bite into salmon sushi purchased at a Uo-Show store in Sha Tin, discovering that the strange texture and flavour was owed to a piece of chewed chewing gum.
The judge ordered Maxim’s to pay a HKD6,000 fine in addition to paying the HKD3,800 laboratory fee incurred while testing the offending sushi, reports Apple Daily.
The prosecution pointed out that the company has had 145 past similar convictions, while the defense said that was accumulated by over 700 different restaurants over the past 15 years, so their track record isn’t thaaaat bad.
When you’re a massive company churning out massive amounts of food, it’s only natural that screws, gloves, cockroaches and gutter oil occasionally end up in your products – right?!
