With everyone on high alert with fake HK$1,000 notes, scam artists are now trying their luck with fake HK$500 notes.
The first case of a fake HK$500 note being used in Hong Kong happened on Christmas Day. Two South Asian men tried to purchase a HK$200 bottle of wine with a photocopy HK$500 note at a grocery store in Yau Ma Tei. The sales staff noticed the fake note immediately and the two men bounced.
Yesterday, two South Asian men, paid a HK$40 meal at a dim sum restaurant in North Point with a fake HK$500 note and got back HK$460. As the cashier was busy with a large number of customers, the staff did not realise until later it was fake, and called the cops immediately.
Police are exploring whether the two cases are connected reports The Standard.
Currently, 39 counterfeit HK$1,000 banknotes have been found in Hong Kong and about 122 in Macau.
It seems like we need to keep our eyes peeled for counterfeit HK$1,000 and HK$500 now. Lets hope we don’t have to watch out for fake HK$100 notes later on!
