A toddler who climbed out of an apartment window in Lam Tin Tuesday was rescued when his family members were alerted to the runaway child from the screams of frantic residents downstairs.

A viral video capturing the close shave circulated online, showing the three-year-old, wearing only a diaper, dangling outside a fourth floor window in Hing Tin Estate. In the minute-long clip, a woman is seen hauling the child up as he struggles.

The boy’s grandmother told HK01 that she was “scared to death.” His grandson was lying in bed, she said, when he is believed to have climbed out of the window by wriggling through the window grills.

The mother and grandmother only realized the boy’s predicament when they heard screams from outside, where residents downstairs were trying to get their attention.

They then rushed into the room and managed to bring the toddler back to safety.

The grandmother said the boy suffers from developmental delays and does not yet know how to speak, so he did not yell for help.

Nobody was arrested in the incident, but the toddler’s 36-year-old mother was given a verbal warning. The family says they will get their window grills secured to prevent another accident in the future, HK01 reported.
