Vintage video of Hong Kong’s first black rainstorm shows us how it’s really done!

If you’re new to Hong Kong and therefore haven’t quite figured out why the city shuts down with a bit of black rain, this video of Mother Nature’s carnage in 1992 is sure to help you understand:

The storm, which hit Hong Kong in May of that year, actually prompted the government to issue colour coding to heavy downpours for the first time.

Needless to say, this one was “Black” – much like the storm we saw this morning… but not.

Returned to our attention by Redditor mainlander_, the compilation of news clips shows insane torrents of water gushing down Hong Kong’s highways and pavements, immersing cars and sweeping pedestrians down hills as they desperately cling on to their umbrellas.

At one point two washed-away people collide with the back of a stationary taxi, much to the alarm of the British video filmer you can hear in the background.

All the other commentary is in Cantonese, but it’s not too tough to figure out what’s going on: there was a shitoad of rain and drainage did not yet exist.
