VIDEO: Students make the commute from Hong Kong to Central TOTALLY AWESOME!

Do you hate the long, boring commute…from Hong Kong Station to Central Station? Yeah, it’s a drag, right? Well a group of smart Hong Kong students think they’ve got the answer.

Check out this super cool simulation, uploaded to Vimeo this week. Created by Hong Kong Polytechnic University students Quincey Dong, Yee Log Lo, Michelle Ma and Tommy Quek, “96 Seconds” is an awesome idea for an installation along the combined 90 metres of moving walkway between the two MTR stations.

It’s kind of hard to explain (so watch the video), but the idea seems to allow commuters to control the waves of a synthetic sea, on which bounces 1.5-metre balls. The fibre optic-like lighting above would also apparently be stimulated by the bouncing balls. Pretty awesome, we think you’ll agree!

And its purpose? To allow Hongkongers to detach from the stresses of everyday life and become playful with their surroundings. The blurb with the Vimeo upload says:

“Mobile devices allow people to multitask from the time that they shut their front door til the time that they sit down at their cubicle. Whether it’s for work or entertainment, a very common occurrence in MTR stations are people’s head’s down staring at their iPhone while walking towards their destination.

“The long corridor that connects Hong Kong Station and the Central MTR provides an excellent space where commuters can be snapped out of their smartphone-aided, zombie-like trance and give them the chance to interact with the environment.”

Here’s to that! Let’s hope this vision gets turned into a reality.
