Despite taking place back in January for Chinese New Year, the (official) video of an awesome classical flashmob performed by the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of Hong Kong at Pacific Place has just been released on YouTube. It’s already been a big hit online, having received more than 26,500 views and counting since its upload on Aug. 6th.
The magical performance of Dong Fang Zhi Zhu (Pearl of the East), a composition about Hong Kong itself, begins with a loan girl at a grand piano. Gradually, she is joined by dozens of violinists, percussionists and an entire wind section, all coordinated to their crescendo by MYO artistic director and chief conductor Ms Synthia Ko.
When the piece is finished, the steely-faced musicians do an excellent job of ignoring the whoops of the crowd, and melt seamlessly away into the background as quickly as they appeared. What a talented bunch, but what took you so long to release it?
