(Video) Lawmaker tackled to the ground during debate over high-speed railway checkpoint

It was straight-up rugby today at Legco as tension spilled over and a recently elected pro-democracy lawmaker was tackled by security guards after displaying impressive elusiveness during a mad dash across the chamber.

The dramatic scenes came during a Legco bills committee meeting to discuss controversial plans to allow mainland authorities to operate within a special port area at the high-speed rail link terminus in West Kowloon.

Connecting Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, the express link is slated to open later this year.

According to RTHK, frictions boiled over after committee chairwoman Regina Ip overruled pan-democratic lawmakers’ request for a point of order and insisted members finish discussing the bill’s general principles and begin scrutinizing its clauses.

At this point, lawmaker Au Nok-hin rushed towards officials holding out a sheet of paper.

With a deft change of direction, he managed to gain a few yards, though ultimately, superior numbers won out.

According to RTHK, the meeting was briefly suspended, with Regina Ip blasting pan-dems for drawing out the process.

Order, though, was soon restored and the action replay uploaded to the internet.
