Footage of a Chinese woman’s profane and xenophobic rant towards a Filipino woman on a Hong Kong bus has been shared widely on social media this week, sparking outrage among the city’s large Filipino community.
The clip was posted by Facebook user Angela Sentillas Pasco in the early hours of Sunday. In her caption, Pasco wrote that she boarded the bus in Kwai Chung and sat next to the Chinese woman. Pasco said the passenger began yelling at her for being “too fat” and demanding that she get off the bus.
Pasco began filming her seatmate after she started yelling in Cantonese. In the video, which is almost three minutes long, the Chinese woman repeatedly called Pasco a “smelly c—” and told her to “go back home”.
Soon after the video opens, the Chinese woman can be heard yelling, “You’re only good for doing farm work. You overstay, the police will arrest your smelly c—. This isn’t your home, did you know?”
Throughout the video, the woman repeatedly says, “This isn’t your home, you’re not a Hongkonger, get out”, and disparages Pasco’s physical appearance, describing her as “fat” and “a few hundred pounds”.
In a bizarre turn, the woman accuses Pasco of almost breaking her phone, then says the gadget is “worth more than you”. “You’d never be able to cover the cost. You and your goddamn out-of-date iPhone. Mine is a Samsung. […] Smelly c—.”
Eventually, the Chinese woman calms down after being confronted by other Cantonese-speaking bus passengers.
While it was posted over the weekend, the video has seen a spike in reactions and shares today, with many commenters appearing to be from the local Filipino and Indonesian communities. The overwhelming majority expressed their sympathy towards Pasco, and condemned her seatmate for being rude and racist.
