Uni dropout from Hong Kong jailed for killing Taiwan landlord with dumbbell and knife

A university dropout from Hong Kong was jailed for life in Taiwan on Monday for murdering his landlord with a dumbbell and a knife.

Mak Ka-ki, who dropped out of the Chinese Culture University in 2013 but continued to live on campus, got into a fight with his 70-year-old landlord on Dec. 2 last year.

Mak hit the man, surnamed Lin, over the head with a dumbbell before stabbing him in the neck and the chest with a fruit knife.

The two apparently got into the altercation over unpaid rent.

Mak called the police to report that he had found a dead body, with officers discovering the landlord’s corpse rolled up in a mattress and left in the corridor of the building in Shilin district.

The court in Taiwan also heard how Mak’s family were not aware that he had quit uni and continued to send him money, which he spent on pimping up his motorbike, entertainment and stock investments.

Mak has been jailed for life with no right to appeal.
