Unfit man steals HKD17,000, gets arrested 250 metres away after running out of breath

A 60-year-old man was arrested in Mong Kok in the early hours of today after he stole cash and valuables from a fruit stall owner, then ran out of breath 250 metres away while trying to flee the scene of the crime.

Oriental Daily reports that the stall owner, surnamed Kan, was closing up her shop on Shanghai Street at around 2am this morning. Kan put around HKD15,000 in cash and her HKD2,000 phone in her backpack, and left it in front of her shop as she took out the rubbish.

The thief, a 60-year-old man, reportedly saw the backpack unattended, took it and ran away, apparently just in time for Kan to spot him.

Kan reportedly chased the suspect from Shanghai Street to Changsha Street, before the 60-year-old “ran out of breath” around 250 metres later and was caught by Kan.

The police arrested the wannabe thief after receiving a report, and took him to hospital for injuries to his hand. He was later detained for further inquiries.

Kan told police officers that she had noticed him wandering around the area in the last few days before the attempted theft.

Seems to us like he should have got in better shape before attempting a theft like that – maybe adding more fruit (like that from his victim’s stall) to his diet would have helped.
