A typhoon could hit Hong Kong this long weekend, according to weather geeks on social media

A typhoon could be heading our way just in time for the public holiday next Monday, according to speculations on social media.

However, if it’s anything like the last typhoon scare we had on the first day of the Mid Autumn Festival, it’ll be as gloriously sunny as ever.

Weather Underground of Hong Kong, a website and Facebook page founded by a weather expert with no affiliations to official Hong Kong weather channels, posted about a “low pressure area” in Hong Kong’s southeast – although it does, reassuringly, tell us that “room for development” is slim.

As of press time, the post has over 400 “reactions”and 20 shares on Facebook. It has also attracted a flurry of comments from netizens, as would be expected from weather-obsessed Hongkongers. It’s a hangover from our time under British rule, we suppose.

The page also references data from the European Centre of Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and the Global Forecast System, alluding to the potential of a typhoon forming.

Here’s what the Hong Kong Observatory’s nine-day weather forecast has to say:

The area of low pressure to the southeast of the Philippines will develop into a tropical cyclone and move towards the vicinity of the Luzon Strait, entering the South China Sea in the latter part of this week.

However:

The local weather in the latter part of this week and early next week will depend on the development of the tropical cyclone and the northeast monsoon.

Let’s keep our umbrellas crossed for a sunny long weekend ahead. After all, it would be a waste of a typhoon if we’re already off work, right?
