A mainland Chinese woman has been jailed in Hong Kong after swallowing a fake gem in a bungled attempt to steal a diamond worth HKD1.6 million. If you’re interested, which we know you are, it took her four days to poop it out.
Liu Xiuluan, 34, and her accomplice Huang Yanming, 42, were sentenced to 28 months in prison yesterday after earlier pleading guilty to one count of attempted theft each, the SCMP reports.
The District Court heard that the pair used fake passes to gain entry to the Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair at the Convention and Exhibition Centre on June 25.
Once inside, Liu asked to see a 3.54 carat diamond being displayed by the Star Brilliance Company. She then attempted to swap the massive rock with a fake but was spotted by a member of staff, giving her no other option but to swallow the fake. She’s obviously one of those talented people who can take their vitamins without water.
The judge originally sentenced the pair to four years behind bars but reduced the jail term after considering their guilty pleas and the fact that the scheme was unsuccessful. Because if you screw up and own up you deserve a break.
