Two Hong Kong billionaire families in Asia’s top 5 wealthiest list

Billionaire Lee Shau-kee’s family has been ranked the second wealthiest in Asia with assets of USD24.1 billion (HKD186.8 billion) in the list of Asia’s 50 richest families compiled by Forbes Asia magazine.

Lee was ranked behind South Korea’s Lee family, which controls Samsung. The family’s net worth was estimated at USD26.6 billion (HLD206.1 billion) as of late September.

The third richest are the Ambanis of India’s Reliance Group with a combined net worth of USD21.5 billion (HKD166.6 billion), followed by Thailand’s Chearavanont family with USD19.9 billion (HKD154.2 billion), generated from the agriculture-based Charoen Pokphand group.

Rounding out the top five is the Kwok family, which controls Hong Kong’s Sun Hung Kai property empire, with a combined net wealth of USD19.5 billion (HKD151.1 billion).
