Two British women are in hospital after being hit by a Mercedes that lost control and mounted the pavement of Aberdeen Street, SoHo, on Saturday night.
The 31-year-old male driver initially refused to take a breathalyser test before finally agreeing after making phone calls and drinking water non-stop.
The test showed he had been drinking but not in excess of the legal limit for driving.
Karen Thomas, the woman who was most seriously injured, reportedly went flying though the air after being hit by the car, which mounted the pavement and crashed into a shop front.
Her friend told the SCMP last night that the 30-year-old is still in intensive care after undergoing an operation to stop internal bleeding in her brain and surgery on her pelvis at Queen Mary Hospital.
Thomas has been living in Hong Kong for six years.
The other woman, who is also 30 and called Rebecca, according to police, is in a stable condition. She was in Hong Kong on a working holiday.
Police made no arrests after the incident.
