TVB fined HKD150,000 for giving starlets KFC chicken during awards show

TVB is in hot water (or rather, hot oil) for feathering the nest with a spot of not-so-subtle advertising during its annual awards ceremony last year.

Viewers of the 2015 TVB Anniversary Awards, which took place on Dec. 13, 2015, complained that there was excessive and glaringly obvious product placement by KFC.

Halfway through the show, boxes of KFC were brought on stage to attendees, who proceeded to awkwardly devour the fried chicken while decked out in their gala gear… or should we say fried chicken finery?

Two celebs were even heard exclaiming, “We get to eat good food!” during the broadcast, Ming Pao reports.

Oh, and let’s not forget the row of starlets spring chickens who sipped at their red KFC-branded cups in matching red lipstick. Hey, they’ll probably be able to wear matching KFC nail polish to this year’s show!

The broadcasting giant obviously ruffled some feathers with their Kentucky Fried Commercial, as multiple complaints were made to the Communications Authority. (Many others just indulged in some good ol’ fashioned bellyaching squawking online.)

Yesterday, the watchdog stated that TVB would receive a HKD150,000 fine for breaching the TV Programme and TV Advertising Codes. That’s like, 797 to 1,162 bucket meals, depending on your appetite.
