A incoming male passenger was arrested at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday after 15 kilos of ivory and ivory products were found hidden in his clothing.
The 27-year-old, who claimed to be a businessman (snort), was found guilty of one count of importing of endangering species at Tsuen Wan Magistrates’ Court today and fined HKD62,000.
He arrived in Hong Kong from Lagos, Nigeria, via Dubai yesterday but was intercepted by local customs officers who “found his gait unnatural”.
On closer inspection, he was discovered at have an estimated HKD150,000’s worth of ivory stashed in specially made compartments sown into his vest and pants.
The products have been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for further investigation.
