The alleged triad member who hit and killed a motorist on Tsing Kwai Highway then fled by hijacking a car was arrested in Yuen Long yesterday, 38 hours after the fatal crash.
Police apprehended the suspect, a 36-year-old man surnamed Kwok, in a village house in Pat Heung at 7:15pm yesterday, Ming Pao reports. Under police caution, Kwok said he had been drinking before colliding with motorcyclist Wu Man-yuen, who later died from his injuries.
He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop after an accident, failing to report an accident, driving without a valid licence, driving without third party insurance, and claiming to be a triad member.
Kwok was taken into police custody for questioning. A number of items were seized from his house, including the clothes he wore during the fatal crash.
At around 4am on Tuesday, Kwok, who was driving a white Toyota Alphard, smashed the seven-seater van into the back of 52-year-old Wu’s motorcycle. The seven-seater then burst into flames.
As passersby called an ambulance for Wu, Kwok hijacked a passing car by claiming to be a member of the Wo Shing Wo triad. He forced the car’s driver, a 28-year-old man surnamed Lau, to take him to a petrol station 5.6 kilometres away before escaping on foot.
The Toyota Kwok crashed belongs to a company which organises VIP events at casinos in Macau, where SCMP reports that he worked as a driver.
